THE MAFIA BOSS SAW ME CARRYING A MASSIVE GOLD-FRAMED MIRROR DURING HIS ENGAGEMENT DINNER—THEN HIS FIANCÉE LIED ABOUT WHY I WAS HURT.
Luca remained silent for several long seconds.
Then he looked at me.

“Claire, did Vanessa know that you heard that conversation?” “Yes.” “And she still ordered you to carry that mirror downstairs?”
I nodded. His expression hardened. Before he could say anything else, Daniel walked into the study carrying a tablet.
“Boss, we found the server.” Luca turned toward him. “Who was receiving the recordings?”
Daniel hesitated. “Not one person. Four separate accounts.” He placed the tablet on the desk.
“The first belongs to Vanessa’s attorney. The second is registered to a private investigator. The third is connected to an offshore financial account.”
He paused. “And the fourth?” Daniel looked directly at Luca. “It belongs to your brother, Matteo.”
The room fell completely silent. “Matteo?” Daniel nodded.
“The recordings include conversations about your will, your companies, your finances, and the family trust.
Whoever was behind this wasn’t simply spying on you. They were preparing for what would happen if you died—or trying to make sure they controlled everything afterward.”

A chill ran down my spine. Luca slowly turned toward me. “Claire, you may have saved my life tonight.” I shook my head.
“I only told you the truth.” “No,” he replied quietly. “You told the truth even though you had every reason to be afraid of what it might cost you.”
Then he walked out of the study. Downstairs, the engagement celebration had continued without us.
Vanessa stood beside the champagne tower, laughing with several guests.
The moment she saw Luca enter, she smiled. “There you are. Is Claire all right?” Luca stopped behind her. “She will be.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared. “What is that supposed to mean?” Luca placed the tiny recording device on the table.
Vanessa froze. The color drained from her face. The conversations throughout the room stopped instantly.
Luca pressed a button. Vanessa’s own voice echoed through the dining room. “She found the recorder.”
Then came the man’s voice asking whether Luca had changed his will. Nobody spoke. Vanessa immediately looked toward Matteo.

Matteo glanced at the nearest exit. He never reached it.
Daniel’s security team appeared at the doors, blocking both of them. Luca’s voice remained frighteningly calm.
“You lied about Claire. You assaulted her. You secretly installed surveillance equipment in my study. And for days, you’ve been gathering information about my private affairs.”
Vanessa’s voice cracked. “Luca, please. Let me explain.” “I’m sure you have an explanation.”
She stepped closer. “But I love you.” Luca stared at her without emotion. “No. You loved what you believed I would leave behind.” Vanessa’s face crumpled.
Suddenly, Matteo lost control. “This was her idea!” he shouted. Vanessa spun toward him. “You promised you would protect me!”
Luca’s voice cut through the room. “That’s enough.”
Twenty minutes later, the police arrived. By midnight, the mansion had fallen silent.

The guests were gone. Champagne glasses remained untouched on the tables, and the engagement decorations suddenly looked almost ridiculous.
I was standing in the hallway, preparing to leave, when Luca approached me.
He held out an envelope. I opened it and stared at the contents.
My entire month’s salary was inside, along with enough money to cover my medical treatment.
“I can’t take this,” I said. “You can.” I looked up at him. “Why?”
His eyes moved toward the enormous mirror leaning against the wall.
“Because if you hadn’t carried that mirror downstairs tonight, I might never have discovered what was happening under my own roof.”
A faint smile touched my lips. “I suppose the mirror finally proved useful.” For the first time that evening, Luca smiled.

“Claire?” “Yes?” “Tomorrow, the mirror is going back.”
“To your study?” He shook his head.
Then he pointed toward the mansion’s grand entrance. “Somewhere everyone can see it.” I understood immediately.
The mirror would remain there as a reminder—not of the secrets it had concealed, but of the truth it had helped reveal.
Because sometimes the most dangerous people aren’t hiding behind ugly faces.
They’re hiding behind the most beautiful ones.
And sometimes, you have to look twice to see what’s really there.
