“Mom… there’s someone down there…” the frightened girl whispered as she ran toward her mother. But when María looked into the depths of the old well, a chilling wave of terror swept over her.
A Chance Rescue That Changed Everything
The approaching car sent clouds of dust swirling through the air. María felt her fear slowly give way to cold determination.
She quickly helped the injured woman to her feet and guided her toward the house. Her hands were still trembling, but she forced herself to move as quietly as possible.
They had barely reached the door when the sound of screeching brakes echoed through the yard. Then came the footsteps. Heavy. Deliberate. Getting closer.
Someone was heading straight toward the old well.
María froze beside the window, barely daring to breathe. Outside, the man stopped at the edge of the well and stood there silently for several seconds.
Finally, he spoke in a low voice. “Well… it’s all over now.” There was no answer. The silence stretched on.
The man cursed under his breath and took a step back. Then a faint cough came from inside the house. He spun around.
Through the window, his eyes met María’s. For a moment, disbelief spread across his face. Then came pure terror. He stumbled backward as though he were looking at a ghost.
The elderly woman slowly stepped forward, leaning against María for support.“You… you were supposed to…” he stammered.
“Supposed to die?” the woman finished quietly. There was no fear in her voice. No weakness. Only determination.
For a few seconds, nobody moved. Then the man suddenly turned and sprinted toward his car. But he was too late.
The noise had already drawn several neighbors outside. People were entering the yard, asking what had happened. One of them pulled out a phone and began recording.
The man’s panic quickly turned into desperation. There was nowhere left for him to run.
He was caught before he could escape. Later, after everything was over, María sat on the doorstep with her daughter’s hand tightly clasped in hers.
Nearby, the rescued woman gazed quietly at the sky.
